– Mamman Daura has stated 2023 presidency should be about competence and qualification, not region
– President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew also suggested that Nigeria should look-out for new ways, having tried rotational presidency for “two or three times”
– Daura further stated that it is important that all tribes and regions in the country come together and unite as one
Mamman Daura, a nephew to President Muhammadu Buhari and a major influence in his government, has spoken about the 2023 presidency, with the elder statesman saying the best man should be voted for to succeed his kinsman.
The question over who takes the mantle of leadership from President Buhari has been a major point of interest in the country with stakeholders gunning for top shots in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Lagos state governor, Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai, minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi and a host of others have been identified as capable hands to succeed the president when his tenure ends.
Speaking with BBC in an interview, Daura said 2023 presidency should be prioritised on qualification and competence, not on tribe and regional interest.
According to him, whoever has to succeed his kinsman must be on what he has to offer for the country in terms of economy, security and socio-political development.
Daura said Nigeria does not need a rotational presidency which he said has been done three times. He, instead, posited that Nigeria must look beyond region to elect its new leader in 2023.
“Rotation has been done once, twice and three times – it is important that this nation should be united as one, the most qualified/competent (among aspirants) should be elected and not someone who comes from a particular zone,” Daura said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that as politicians continue to outplay one another ahead of the 2023 general elections, a founding member of All Progressives Congress (APC), Buba Galadima, has said the leadership crisis rocking the party is as a result of the politics of 2023 presidency.
Galadima, who made this known while speaking with Daily Sun, further buttressed that the power play in the ruling party has huge connection with the ambition of some party chieftains who want to succeed President Buhari after his tenure.
According to him, APC national leader Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not the only one eyeing the power seat in 2023 as he may find himself in the ring with top hierarchy members including Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state.
