In a significant blow to the Boko Haram insurgency, 69 terrorists and their family members have surrendered to the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Cameroon and Niger.
Chief Military Public Information Officer N’djamena-Chad Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Abubakar in a statement said the surrenders occurred between July 1 and 6, 2024, as Operation Lake Sanity 2 continues to gain momentum.
Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar noted that in a combined maritime operation, Cameroonian and Nigerian forces facilitated the surrender of 56 terrorists, including 13 men, 43 women, and children, in Sector 1, Cameroon, on July 6, 2024.
Additionally, 12 family members of terrorists, comprising 5 women and 7 children, were rescued and handed over to the troops of Sector 1, Operation Hadin Kai.
In a separate incident, a 24-year-old terrorist, Tijjani Muhammad, surrendered with weapons and ammunition to troops of Sector 4, Niger Republic, on July 1, 2024.
He was reported escaping from a Boko Haram camp in Libye Soroa due to the ongoing operation.
The surge in surrenders significantly weakens Boko Haram’s operational capability and undermines the morale of its remaining fighters.
The MNJTF urges remaining terrorists to surrender and embrace peace in the Lake Chad basin region.
